Ottawa probing Transport Canada's handling of Toyota recall

Globe and Mail -- Senior Transport Canada bureaucrats found themselves on the hot seat today on Parliament Hill, forced to defend their actions in the massive recall of Toyotas over acceleration problems.

As a storm of negative publicity and lawsuits batters the auto maker, the Commons committee hearings Thursday and next Tuesday gives Canadian politicians their first chance to grill Transport Canada and Toyota Canada Inc. officials about the recalls and the issue of sudden acceleration.

Bloc MP Mario Laframboise told the committee he's worried Canada is failing to protect consumers as quickly as the U.S.

“What really bothers me ... is we look like we're lagging behind the U.S,” Mr. Laframboise said.

NDP MP Brian Masse raised concerns about how cozy a relationship Transport Canada regulators

I haven't heard how the people of Japan are dealing with their Toyotas. I would guess we will soon see what if anything, the Govt. of Japan is going to do about all of these recalls.

Imagine that, more politicians getting involved in the Toyota debacle. Like there's not enough Washington politicians hidden in the closet now let's throw in a few from Ottawa. Maybe we can catch them all with their hands in the cookie jar!! Yeah right, fat chance!

The Canadian government needs to get their nose out of this issue.

Government can hardly do the job that is required of it, without screwing things up.

LET THE COURTS HANDLE IT.

"“What really bothers me ... is we look like we're lagging behind the U.S,” Mr. Laframboise said."

Who gives a crap if we are lagging behind the US on this matter, are we in some competition with the US in seeing what government can score the most points AFTER THE FACT?

What's next, is the Canadian government going to let our roads go to pot, to see if we can outdo the US with the worst roads?

Sometimes 'keeping up with the Jones' is not a good thing.

The present Canadian government is parroting the US government's transportation policies starting with Bush's refusal to increase Mileage targets for vehicles and province have started moving on it to mimick California's standards.

I've read most of your posts and no one really gets the most salient point of this article!

"Parliament Hill"?? What, Canada HAD to copy the US when locating their deliberative body? They couldn't find a geologic formation uniquely Canadian?? Parliament Island, Parliament Bluff, Parliament Glacier or even Parliament Peninsula!

I hate to ask what color (er… colour) house the Canadian President lives in!

Toyota seems to keep digging a bigger hole for themselves. They need a good PR guy to lead their responses.

I think Toyota tried to imitate GM and Chrysler on the recall issue but unlike "the Big Three" Toyota is being grilled. If This was a GM issue we would barely here about it!! But it is Toyota so it is being treated differently

More 'authority' reviews...Who's paying for these "people" to regulate them... & these reviews... $100 thoussss plus per year w/benefits & pensions...

It appears more like justification of their 'TURF' & 'perks' !!!
